They’re usually expecting the answer to be a particular mix.

Or a premium product.

Or maybe some new technology they’ve read about online.

After more than twenty years building driveways, exposed aggregate, patios and slabs across Adelaide, we’ve learnt that the longest-lasting concrete isn’t defined by one ingredient.

It’s defined by everything that happens before and after it’s poured.

One thing we’ve noticed is that homeowners often think concrete wears out like a set of tyres.

Use it enough and eventually it’s done.

Concrete doesn’t really work like that.

We’ve demolished driveways that had been in place for forty years where the slab itself was still remarkably solid. The reason they were coming out wasn’t because the concrete had failed. The property had changed. The driveway layout no longer suited modern vehicles, or the homeowners wanted a completely different look.

The concrete had already done decades of work.

That’s a pretty good effort.

The funny thing is, we’ve also seen much newer driveways needing major repairs.

The concrete wasn’t always the problem.

The funny thing is, homeowners rarely remember the technical details years later.

They don’t remember the compressive strength or the reinforcement schedule.

They remember whether the driveway still feels solid.

Whether water drains away properly.

Whether it still looks good after another Adelaide summer.

One thing we’ve noticed is that people who think long-term usually end up with the best results.

They ask, “What will still be performing well twenty years from now?”

That’s a completely different conversation.

How the ground is prepared.

How drainage is planned.

Even how the finished surface is selected.
